“When I was designing this collection with ELOQUII, it was important to create something that would make customers feel empowered and confident as they move throughout the world,” says Mercedes. “I put a lot of my own personality into this collaboration, drawing from inspiration my own mother has given me with our ‘hero print.’ Each piece of clothing from this collection has a versatility of textures and prints that can move from brunch to a night out. It was a dream come true to be able to work with ELOQUII on bringing this collection to life.”
Why We Love Melissa Mercedes
The absolute coolest thing about Melissa Mercedes is that she’s self-taught. This rising Afro-Latina design star is the ultimate example that dreams can become a reality. (Remember that!)
After being an invited attendee to the 2016 Latin Grammys, she designed her own dress when she couldn’t find adequate plus-size offerings; the same dress ended up on the cover of People en Español worn by acclaimed singer and actress, Chiquis Rivera. She has designed for notable figures, including Laverne Cox (actress and LGBTQ+ advocate), Lauren Ash (actress and comedian) and Nina Parker (E! News host).
Melissa spent four years working alongside youth as a counselor for Freeport Pride, a non-profit organization. She also prepared students for job interviews during their career search and conducted style tips on dressing for success. After spending some time preparing numerous students for their big moments, she realized it was time to concentrate more on empowering people through fashion.
Melissa started by styling friends and family then created a styling company Called RetroBohoChic. After styling for two years, she realized there was a lack of representation in dresses for women of all sizes. Once she had to make my own dress to attend the Latin Grammys in 2016, she realized something had to be done. That’s when Melissa Mercedes was born.
But how did Mercedes team up with ELOQUII? She won the hearts of the ELOQUII crew as the 2021 winner of The Cultivate Award during its inaugural year. Created by The Curvy Fashionista with ELOQUII as the founding sponsor, the initiative supports the next generation of BIPOC emerging designers in the plus-size fashion community.
